Cherry Capital Men's Chorus

In the mid 1960's, twelve men gathered at the Park Place Hotel for the first meeting of the Cherry Capital Chorus. Since then, the chapter has grown, with hundreds of members through the years, ranging from 14 to their late 80’s. The chorus is a fun group, but we take our singing seriously! With a rigorous learning and rehearsal program, the Cherry Capital Men’s Chorus regularly competes in the Pioneer District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. But being a member of the CCMC also means enriching our community with great harmony and good works. Some performances, like our June Nights of Harmony, are ticketed events raising support for the chorus and we spend several busy days delivering singing Valentines in February and perform at numerous community events and concerts throughout the year. The CCMC is a registered chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and is a 501c3 organization, with contributed support held at the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. One of our most exciting programs is our Partnership Concerts. Building on our philosophy and informal motto of “Harmony with a Purpose - lending strong voices to build a better community,” we contribute by doing what we do best - sing! - while also raising awareness and financial support for other agencies in our community. Since 2011, we have partnered with several organizations to present concerts, including Food Rescue, Benzie Area Habitat for Humanity, the Foundation for Mental Health, Safe Harbor, and the Acme Historical Society. By uniting the volunteers and passions of partnering organizations, we maximize our resources and bring new supporters and audience members together! What draws each of us to the Cherry Capital Men’s Chorus is our love of singing but the reasons why we stay are varied. Sure, it’s about singing, and it’s about learning new things in a fun environment, but it’s also meeting new people and having wonderful life-long friendships, not just here, but across the country. Many have us have met people at competition or at meetings and workshops and being a barbershopper also means that if you are visiting a community and discover a local chapter and rehearsal, you can always just walk right in and sit down - usually, you’ll get handed some music and encouraged to join right in! Membership in the Cherry Capital Men’s Chorus is open to all who enjoy singing a cappella music and working together in a spirit of achievement and fellowship! Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City on 701 Westminster and are always open to visitors and prospective members.
