Event Details

"This mission of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is to produce live orchestral performances, providing entertainment, education, and inspiration for our northern Michigan community."

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra's Young People's Concert features Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and favorite movie music selections by John Wiliams. Charles F Davis Young Artist Competition winner Thomas Agee, will also be performing his grand prize winning selection, the first movement of the Trumpet Concerto by Haydn.

Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra introduces each major family of instruments in the orchestra, generally moving in each family from high to low. The piece not only allows listeners to hear the contrasting voices of the instruments but also offers a peek into musical techniques of earlier centuries, showing how a melody can bounce from one instrument to another. For the grand finale, the original theme reappears in its entirety, set boldly beneath the dancelike fugue theme.

John Williams started his career as a film composer in the 1950's and by the mid 70's he began working with Steven Spielberg the results of which were movies Jurassic Park, ET and Indiana Jones to name a few.

Special appearance by the Petoskey High School and Charlevoix High School Robotics teams.
