The Northern Michigan Brass Band, a 28-piece British style brass band, plays an eclectic mix of traditional brass band classics, marches, transcriptions, featured solos, contest pieces, pop and jazz. General admission is $10 for adults with all students admitted free.

The over-arching programming philosophy of NMiBB is “something for everyone.” Some people listen with their heads, others listen with their hearts, and still others listen with their feet. Our concerts strive to appeal to all these different listening styles.

Each of NMiBB’s Winter Concert programs will open with Diogenes, a contemporary concert piece written by Dutch composer Jacob de Haan followed by Lake of the Moon, a dramatic tone poem depicting of the origins of the Aztec people by Belgian composer Kevin Houben, and Hymn for Diana written in memory of Princess Diana by the contemporary British composer Joseph Turrin. The first half of the concert will conclude with John Phillip Sousa’s homage to the City of Detroit, Pride of the Wolverines.

In keeping with NMiBB's educational mission, the second half of the program will open with the stirring The Standard of St. George March by Kenneth Alford featuring student brass and percussion players from Charlevoix High School Band on March 3 and the Alpena High School Band on March 17.

Completing the program will be George Gershwin’s Overture to Girl Crazy; Misty by Erroll Garner featuring cornetist Ted Pall; Libertango by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla; and the classic swing tune Pennsylvania 6-5000 written by Jerry Gray for the Glenn Miller Band. The concert will conclude with The Washington Post March by John Phillip Sousa.
