Event Details

The Northern Michigan Brass Band, a 28-piece British style brass band, plays an eclectic mix of traditional brass band classics, marches, transcriptions, featured solos, contest pieces, pop and jazz. General admission is $10 for adults with all students and Seniors over 70 admitted free.

The over-arching programming philosophy of NMiBB is “something for everyone.” Some people listen with their heads, others listen with their hearts, and still others listen with their feet. Our concerts strive to appeal to all these different listening styles.

Each of NMiBB’s Spring Concert programs will open with Liberty Fanfare written in 1986 to celebrate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty followed by the overture to Light Cavalry by Franz von Suppé; The Sheherd’s Song, a beautiful traditional French song from the Auvergne; and a set of variations on the hymn Laudate Dominum written specifically for brass band by the contemporary British composer Edward Gregson. The first half of the concert will conclude with the March - Star Lake written for the Salvation Army’s Star Lake Music Camp by Eric Ball.

In keeping with NMiBB's educational mission, the second half of the program will open with the stirring British Eighth March by Zo Elliot featuring student brass and percussion players from the LaSalle High School Band, Craig Hierholzer, Director in St. Ignace on April 29 and the Gaylord High School Band, Aaron Hotelling, Director in Gaylord on May 6.

Completing the program will be Slavonic Dance No. 8 by Antonin Dvořák, Serenade, a delightful piece written by Derek Bourgeois for his own wedding; and “toe-tapping” arrangements of Mack the Knife by Kurt Weill and MacArthur Park by Jim Webb. The concert will conclude with the official march of the United States, John Phillip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.
