Youth ballet company transports the audience back to the days of yesteryear in the Old West.
The idea for Song of Wyoming came from artist director Thomas Morrell’s love of film and television Westerns as a young boy. He searched for a storyline he could adapt, one featuring lots of romance and action, fun and tender moments. When he couldn’t find one, Morrell wrote the Song of Wyoming story himself. In it he pays homage to Western classic characters and scenes: a rough-and-tumble Cowgirl, a handsome Sheriff, a Rancher’s Daughter, a Saloon Keeper with a heart of gold, a Señorita, a Cattle Baron, Eastern Ladies and School Girls. And no Western is complete without lots of cowboys, an intense poker game and a wild barroom brawl. As the dancers were developing their personalities, movements and motivations, Morrell recalls, “The story line began to take on its own personality and took the ballet into a different direction than the original. It was really fascinating!” Dancers perform in fabulous period costumes created from scratch by Laura Bremer and realistic sets designed by Amy Cyr.
