Event Details

Each season, Parallel 45 Theatre invites audiences to a series of play-readings featuring the work of daring playwrights produced across the country and around the world. These plays allow us to include multiple voices in important, ongoing conversations around race, religion, gender-identity and more. Each reading concludes with a panel featuring artists and community members. Making up for lost pandemic time, this year’s readings will take place over the course of one day on the lawn of Parallel 45 Theatre’s outdoor performance space at Civic Center Park, creating a one-day festival of dazzling theatrical material, in-depth conversations, and safe community gathering opportunities. The 2021 playwrights are all award-winning alumni of our partner organization, the MITTEN Lab: Monet Hurst-Mendoza, Liz Morgan and Andrew Rincón. The reading series’ directors hail from across the United States; Katherine M. Carter, Khalia Davis, and Jesse Jou will bring these readings alive in collaboration with the P45 actors you know and love.

Readings at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm

$8 General Admission for 1 reading

$12 All-day festival pass for 3 readings

OUR FATHER

By Liz Morgan, Directed by Khalia Davis

P.J. has spent a long time living in his father’s shadow but when he decides to write a biopic about his legendary “T.V. Dad”, his career finally starts to generate the kind of momentum he’s always wanted. He’s got the best representation team money can buy but can they save him when real life drama threatens to tarnish the legacy of his beloved family sit-com?

BLIND CREST

By Monet Hurst-Mendoza

Directed by Elizabeth Gray

Reading at 8 pm

Tyrell Johnson sits on Death Row for the double-murder of two undercover detectives. Mara Hernandez is a fresh-faced corrections officer, newly appointed to the night watch. Together, this unlikely pair, form an intense bond and make a pact to have a baby. A dark twist on the “boy-meets-girl” and inspired by the unfolding true story of Ronnell Wilson and Nancy Gonzalez, Blind Crest investigates racial identity and mass incarceration in the U.S. by compelling us to ask, "what is the value of a Black life in America, and at what cost are we willing to fight for it?”

Our Seating Plan

This summer’s new seating allows our audience to sit in the open air of the lawn at our P45 Amphitheatre. Our Premium Front Row Seating option will get you a provided and comfortable seat in the front row. All other tickets are General Lawn Seating where you can sit with your friends and family in a predetermined row and safely socially-distanced from others. Patrons will need to bring their own seating and stadium chairs, lawn chairs and blankets are suggested. To make sure everyone has a positive and clear viewing experience, please do not bring any oversized or tall-back chairs or umbrellas. Seating on the lawn will be handled on a first come, first served basis, and will take into account sightlines and comfort level of audience members. Shaded areas will be designated for those in need. Contact us at [email protected] with any additional questions.

Inclement Weather Policy

If inclement weather poses a safety concern, the decision to cancel a performance will be made up to 90 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. If a show is cancelled, you will receive an email notification. In the event of a cancellation, P45 Theatre will automatically contact you about show options or refunds.

Safety at P45

P45 Theatre respectfully follows all CDC and public health guidelines. Michigan currently does not require the use of face masks outdoors, for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people, so the use of masks when seated will be up to each audience member. We do promote and ask guests to wear face masks when being seated by our volunteer ushers, or standing in line for services.
