Small town- native, james, grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan. With “Dead-Head” parents and a community with a taste for folk and roots music, james found herself drawn to storytelling through music at a young age. At age 15 she was given her first guitar as gift. Already a singer, writing and playing quickly followed, turning james’ soulful voice and words into smoky-sweet pop songs. One short year later, james was playing her first professional show; opening the stage for poet and activist, Nicki Giovanni, as a part of the National Writers Series. After having the first taste of working as a professional musician, the deal was sealed.
james attended the Interlochen Arts Academy to hone in her crafts; songwriting and performance. While at Interlochen, james, was selected for a week-long sponsored tour along with five other students. Tour highlights include: Uncommon Ground (Chicago, IL), WGN Radio and TV appearances, and singing the National Anthem at a Chicago Bulls game.
james graduated from Interlochen in the spring of 2015. Three months later, james packed her bags and headed to Berklee College of Music to continue her education in songwriting. While at Berklee, james studied under accomplished industry professionals such as Livingston Taylor and grammy-winner, Paula Cole while playing gigs in the greater-Boston area.
In 2016, james travelled overseas and made a home at Berklee’s Valencia, Spain campus. Being immersed in an entirely different culture while studying music, james began to develop into a “left of center” pop style artist. Completely inspired by the underground pop and electronic dance scene in Western Europe, james took to producing her own songs into synthy upbeat tracks. A door to a new world of “music to dance to” opened. james molded her new pop production with her already intricate vocal melodies and groovy vibe inspired by artists such as Jamiroquai, Maggie Rogers, Lianne La Havas, Lorde, and Michael Jackson.
In 2017, james headed back to the states to play full three-month docket of shows in her home state of Michigan. With a loyal and growing local fanbase, james played over 200+ shows in the midwest including: main stage of Bliss Festival 2015 (among big name artists such as Arlo Guthrie, Pearl and the Beard, and That 1 Guy), The City Opera House, and opening for national acts such as The Crane Wives and The Accidentals. james has also made several national radio and TV appearances.
james recently moved to Nashville to continue pursuing her music full time. On October 14th, 2017, james released her debut single “GOOD DISTRACTION” along with an official music video. The single is a fresh twist on the independent female pop artist sound that is reminiscent of 80’s dance music while drawing influence from modern artists such as Drake, Lorde, Lianne La Havas, and Tori Kelly. But of course with the familiar tones of of modern pop, james add a sparkle to the tune with traditional African-drum rhythms inspired by her travels and love of hand percussion. The song is “heart-ache to dance to.”

Currently playing shows in Nashville and producing/collaborating with other artists, there is promise for more music from james in the near future.
