About This Event
Djangophonique:
From early childhood, a steady stream of musicians shaped guitarist and band leader Andrew Brown’s musical interests and influences including his father, a motown session musician, and his uncle, a world-class jazz bassist. In 2010, Andrew co-founded and toured extensively for several years with The Appleseed Collective before turning his attentions to Hot Club music and founding Djangophonique, an award-winning project that has been described as “…the cleanest, most genuine manouche jazz that can be heard in Michigan” (Local Spins).
Vocalist Katie Smith’s approach to life and music is anchored in her deep reverence and appreciation for humanity and life itself. A Doctor of Occupational Therapy with an active private counseling practice, Katie draws upon her theatre background, dance and yoga training, the raw power of her voice, and her joie de vivre, to connect with the audience and foster truly magical experiences.
Spencer Lajoye
Spencer LaJoye makes indie folk music for everyone.
With a coy smile, a wink to the back row, and carefree expertise, they spin their crystalline vocals through a loop pedal while strumming the weathered acoustic guitar they acquired for leading worship in high school. “I don’t believe in much anymore,” they announce to teary-eyed audiences, “except a little bit of everything. And you. And me. And that art can change the world simply by making us feel something.”
In February 2024, Spencer released Shadow Puppets, their first full-length album under their new name. The album was produced by Chris DuPont in Ypsilanti, MI, and is a clever synth-guided and lyric-driven departure from some of LaJoye’s more universally anthemic offerings. In 2024, Spencer was the winner of the Songwriter Serenade competition in Schulenburg, TX.
