Fools, by Neil Simon
A Comic Fable
Set in a small village in the Ukraine, during the late 19th century. Fools is the story of Leon Tolchinsky who has just landed a terrific teaching job in an idyllic Russian hamlet. When he arrives he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. When Leon takes a new job educating Sophia, the daughter of Doctor Zubritsky and his wife, Lenya, he soon learns that there is a curse on the village of Chronic Stupidity for the last 200 years. Complications ensue when Leon falls in love with Sofia and no one tells him that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he too becomes Stupid.
