The Cathedral Barn is the newly finished event space at the Historic Barns Park located on the old State Hospital Grounds, now the Grand Traverse Commons, in Traverse City. Built in 1885, the thirty-foot ceilings and 3,500 square feet make for a gorgeous entertainment and cultural arts venue that hosts a wide array of social and corporate gatherings, weddings, non-profit events, and musical acts. The multi-functional event space is targeted to preserve its historic function as the heart of the local farming and botanical gardens community.

Speaking or singing, the voice of Joshua Davis is a disarming instrument: weathered and warm, as capable of conjuring confessional intimacy on a global stage as it is of making a small room, well off the beaten path, resonate with startling urgency and power. Couple it with an earnest poetic sensibility, a boundless work ethic, and an uncanny gift for connecting with audiences spanning generations, and it’s no wonder that Davis is now poised at the brink of the sort of widespread recognition that typically passes right over such a humble troubadour.

“My sound is rooted in the folk tradition,” Davis explains, “but it’s not folk music. Terms like Americana, roots rock, and heartland rock come up, but there’s so much more to it than that. I’m not a purist: I play with that American folk lineage. I play with those metaphors.” His versatility and ravenous musical curiosity has resulted in a trio of solo albums, each a thoughtful dispatch on life, love, change, and growth. All of this folksy mannerism and simple storytelling enriched with melodic hooks and a danceable beat is an engaging combination which caught the eye of NBC talent scouts.

Davis may not have taken home the big brass ring on The Voice (although his stint there did attract a remarkable collaborator, Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, to produce his forthcoming new album), but at this point in his career he seems happier than ever. "When I wake up every day I feel grateful to be able to do what I do for a living," Davis said from the stage at a recent Ann Arbor performance. There was no entertainer's artifice to the statement; that's just who Davis is.

Porterhouse Presents is celebrating nearly 10 years of promoting cultural events in Traverse City and thrilled to help co-create, with The Historic Barns team, a music and arts series for the Barn.“I am very inspired by the Commons and Historic Barns progress,” Sam Porter, founder of Porterhouse Presents, says. “We need more listening venues of this size for music and cultural events and this space is perfect local shows to build a foundation for the future.” May Erlewine will play a show at the Barn on December 3. Stay tuned for more events in this series.

Porterhouse Presents is committed to providing more than a great show—we hope to enrich your senses with a wonderful cultural arts experience, expand the arts market, and support this beautiful venue.
