Creating a Recovery-Oriented System of Care, Questions, Evaluations

The Speakers:

Rebecca McDonald

Rebecca McDonald has served for over three decades in international humanitarian efforts for women and children at risk in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and the United States. She has traveled to over 85 countries and has worked in more than 50. She has designed or assisted in developing international programs including micro- lending projects, vocational training programs, social enterprises, safe houses, and other humanitarian efforts. In 2006, she founded Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int’l) to meet the growing demand among Americans for involvement in these programs, especially those that address human trafficking. Women At Risk, International strives to create circles of protection around women and children by uniting others to embrace, educate, and empower those at risk, both globally and locally. Rebecca McDonald is a president, speaker, and consultant, regularly presenting to government agencies, legal and health care professionals, private universities, social work organizations, and faith-based organizations on nonprofit/social enterprise development, human trafficking, and various risk issues.

Dr. Kevin McCauley

Dr. Kevin McCauley is a Senior Fellow at The Meadows of Wickenburg, Arizona and Senior Recovery Advisor at Northbound Treatment Services in Orange County, California. He first became interested in the treatment of substance use disorders while serving as a Naval Flight Surgeon where he observed the U.S. Navy’s policy of treating addiction as a safety (not moral) issue and returning treated pilots to flight status under careful monitoring. Dr. McCauley wrote and directed two films: “Memo to Self” about the concepts of recovery management, and “Pleasure Unwoven” about the neuroscience of addiction which won the 2010 Michael Q. Ford Award for Journalism from the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. Kevin also continues to assist pilots with substance use disorders through his collaboration with the Air Line Pilots Association’s HIMS Program.

Educational Goals:

There is often a dark, tangled web that surrounds victims of trafficking, trauma and substance use disorders. Rebecca McDonald, Founder and President of Women Against Risk, International, wants to bring light into the darkness of this century’s fastest growing arm of crime, human trafficking. The program focuses on human trafficking with identifying signs and symptoms by medical category and being able to report and respond. The program will provide an appropriate assistance plan that can be implemented to make changes for the victim and community.

Our nation finds itself in an unprecedented moment in history where the leading cause of death in young people is no longer motor vehicle accidents but drug poisoning. The epidemic of opioid addiction and rise of opioid-related overdose deaths has quickly evolved to increased heroin use. Dr. Kevin McCauley examines the changes in the brain with substance use disorders and trauma and why people use non-medical and prescribed medications. Dr. McCauley presents about Medication-Assisted Treatment and how it interacts with the opioid receptor system. The program also reviews recovery management in building integrated support systems around people dealing with trauma and substance use disorders to begin, maintain and strengthen their recovery.

Educational Credits:

Application has been approved for 6.0 Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP, specific to substance use) credits, 6.0 Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative CEUs, and 6.0 Michigan Board of Nursing credits.
