Lying on the 45th parallel – like Bordeaux, Milan and other wine producing regions – the Peninsula stretches north 19 miles into Grand Traverse Bay and is only four miles wide at the broadest point. The area is virtually surrounded by 600-foot deep water in East and West Grand Traverse Bays. The temperatures stay cold longer in the spring, protecting the plants from late frosts. The warm temperatures linger in the fall, so the grapes benefit from an extra six to seven weeks of ripening. The rolling hills and lake-effect snow ensure Arctic blasts of freezing air won’t stick around long enough to harm the vines.
