This workshop was inspired by a collaborative exhibit with Michigan Legacy Art Park artist Bill Allen that was displayed at the Dennos Museum Center in 2010. A video was made to describe and document their collaboration and how Fleda writes art-inspired poetry.

We’ll begin the workshop by hearing a few classic poems that respond to art. Then together, we’ll closely examine one Art Park sculpture as a model for how we might approach our work. We’ll make lists of words and develop a map of how our mind responds to the piece.  After developing this model for how we might work with a piece, we’ll each walk to find the sculpture we want to work with. We’ll fill out our “map,” for this sculpture, jot down some descriptive words, and return to our mutual work space to begin on the poem. At this point, we’ll take a brief break, to let our minds work behind the scene. When we go back to work, we’ll stay at it for close to 45 minutes, to see if we can get a first draft on paper. We’ll end the workshop by hearing some of the hot-off-the-press drafts, offering suggestions for revision if requested.
