"Saldaje" is inspired by the Portuguese expression of intense, often nostalgic longing. A fitting title for "The darkest ukulele band in northern Michigan. Their eclectic, original songs conjure elements of Eastern European, Arabic and Celtic music, Smoky Jazz, Tang and poetic ballads. Saldaje is Melonie Steffes and Shaun Anchak, and a growing family of assorted ukuleles, violin, mandolin, guitar, toy piano, accordion, oud, saw, harmonicas, dance, puppetry and other little surprises. Some of their influences include: Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cae, Suzanne Vega, Nina Simone, Eastern European and Arabic musics.

Summer exhaled, the ribcage rises more slowly, filling with rich damp air made sweet by all that decays at the season’s end. With this feast of the worms and fungi there oozes forth the promise of fertile soil for the coming year. That is if there is one. I hear tell that on December 21st, 2012, the world as we know it may see a calamitous demise or perhaps instead a paradigm shift of mind bending proportions. Either way, I know where I’ll be…Saldaje will be gracing the stage of the InsideOut Gallery in Traverse City for a very special double feature event. First, it is the CD release party for “Let Them Dance” then, a special Winter Solstice set, Saldaje style, entitled “Winter’s Ghost”.

Mark your calendar for this evening of song, story, and magical surprises on the darkest and longest night of the year.
